PODCAST 89: Jennifer Abbasi on the Emerging Science of COVID-19 Antibody Testing

Jennifer Abbasi, associate managing editor at the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), talks to Jonathan Kay about new COVID-19 antibody tests that may help stop the pandemic and save the lives of the already infected.

  1. I enjoyed this podcast. Thank you for sharing.

I have one lingering question - a positive antibody test means the person has already been infected by the coronavirus causing COVID-19, but what does it say about their susceptibility for re-infection? We do not yet have evidence for how long antibodies confer immunity to re-infection from this virus (the WHO likes to make this very clear). That said, is it reasonable to assume that antibodies to this virus function similarly to antibodies to other coronaviruses, conferring immunity to re-infection for several years? Accepting this assumption (which seems reasonable?) would of course have huge public policy implications.
